Second Avenue Subway
As you may be aware NYC Transit is working on plans for a Second Avenue Subway line that will improve mass transit access to residents of the
East Side. The anticipated start of construction is at the end of 2004. The line would generally run under Second Avenue from northern Manhattan to Houston Street. South of Houston Street, the alignment would continue via Chrystie or Forsyth Street, then St. James Place and Water Street.

Various Board Committees are monitoring the projects impact to the community.

Third Water Tunnel
The 25-30 year discussion of a Third Water Tunnel for the City is soon to become a reality. This project is scheduled to begin in 2007 and is expected to finish in 2010. The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) plans to place two shaft tunnels within our district. Proposed shaft site 32B is slated for
East 35th Street between 2nd Avenue and the midtown tunnel approach (in sidewalk and partially in the street, adjacent to St. Varten Park). The preferred site for shaft 33B is under the Queens Borough Bridge at East 59th Street and 1st Avenue.
